Casino fighting $25,000 fine for operating unlicensed airline after flying Canadian high rollers to Atlantic City
An Atlantic City casino that flew high-rolling Canadian gamblers back and forth on complimentary flights aboard a private jet is fighting a steep fine for operating an unlicensed airline in Canada.
The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa was originally fined $25,000 for the free flights, meant as a perk to lure wealthy Canadians who gamble at a high level to visit. An appeal cut the fine in half. Now the casino has won a Federal Court of Canada challenge to get a new review of whether they even broke the rules at all.
As the case is argued, it sheds light on the way U.S. casinos attract Canadians to visit their venues in the crowded gambling scene; several Canadians who took the casino’s flights were asked by the government to file affidavits about their casino perks.
